Walking Digger Dig Days
Public Event for Woodland Riders · By Brett Nicolle
When - Friday, February 3, 2012 at 8:00am until Monday, February 6, 2012 at 5:00pm
We have finally managed to secure the walking digger to complete the sections of track 4. It will start work on Friday at 8am and work, Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday until 5pm or until the light has gone. We need at least 3 people on site each day to act as a groundsman for the digger and to do any manual digging and shaping and using a compactor. We are spending a lot of your money on this machine, but there is no other way for the work to get done, we want to make the most of it, so please, if you can attend on any day please do. If you are attending, please write on the woodland riders Facebook wall which day(s) and what time you can attend so we can draw up a list to ensure we are covered. Obviously the more the merrier, so if we get 20+ people on each day that's fine!!!! Please spread the word...
Im going on Sunday if anybody fancies coming with me? Ben10
Walking digger
Chris Akrigg again, all his vids are great!
I think we should try and get as many Dept.26 club members as possible to go to one or all of these meetings, the Cardinham woods sounds like the most interesting - Ben10
.................................................................................................
A further series of drop-in events are planned in February, where people are invited to come along and hear the latest about plans for adventurous off-road cycle trails at the Forestry Commission’s Cardinham Woods and the National Trust’s Lanhydrock estate.
Similar events were held in the summer of 2011, with many positive comments received from attendees and very useful feedback gained to benefit development of the plans. These events will offer a great opportunity for people to find out more and for project staff to get further feedback on the plans.
The arrangements for the drop-in sessions are as follows:
Lanhydrock – Thursday 2 February from 2pm-7pm in the restaurant.
Cardinham Woods – Sunday 12 February from 10am-4pm in Woods Cafe.
Bodmin – Monday 13 February from 2pm-8pm at Shire Hall.
The proposals are part of the wider 1 South West project, which is developing off-road cycling hubs across the region. The proposals include family friendly easy and moderate cycle trails and a new cafe and cycle hire centre on the Lanhydrock Estate. Moderate and difficult trails, suited to those seeking a longer ride or more of a challenge will be at Cardinham Woods.
The current timetable is for trail development at Cardinham Woods during spring and summer 2012. It is anticipated that planning application for the trails, cafe, cycle hire and car park alterations at Lanhydrock will be submitted in May 2012 and, if successful, work will begin here in the winter of 2012/13.
Hub Development Manager Angela Proctor said: "We hope to see lots of people at these drop-in sessions
– everyone is very welcome. It will be a great chance for people to find out more and give their thoughts on the latest proposals. More detailed information about the plans at Cardinham and Lanhydrock will be available on the 1 South West website from 2nd February – www.1sw.org.uk".

Here it is!! The Dept.26 crash montage epic! Enjoy!
This has nothing to do with anything, I was looking for pics to do with electricity and bikes to try and keep with the theme. Found this one and liked it but couldn't work out what the hell he's carrying!! The slacker!
Slacker!
This is the first none bike VOW but i think the chairman getting electrocuted is something most people will want to see!!
This is a little teasers for a full vid of crashes coming soon. Send your clips to Ben10, call 07791642192 or email benjaminjamesclarke@hotmail.com
....Any footage anybody might have of any Dept.26 member past or present having a crash!! Im going to start putting together a little slam section! Phone 07791642192 or email benjaminjamesclarke@hotmail.com. Cheers, Ben10
Whoops!
Really good day, good weather, good route, no casualties (apart from Robs car!) Nice one Ken!
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/137760669
Copy and paste the link above into a browser to see the stats and route from the ride or just click on the blue link below. Once on the Garmin site you can scroll back and look at the routes and stats from any of the rides we have done (as long as I was there and remembered to take my Garmin!)
........You will probably be shot. Or run down by a motorised vehicle. We have been asked to stay out of the woods completely from now until the 9th Jan because there is a number of shooting and motor events going on. PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE THIS MESSAGE!!!
Also, from now on we have been asked to only ride in the woods on club days (Saturday mornings and Wednesday nights) because there are regular Archery events going on. These take place mostly on Sat afternoons so avoid those most of all. The people that look after the woods don't mind us riding but they like to know WHEN we are riding (Sat / Wed night) so that no conflicts or bikers with arrows sticking out their heads arises.
Also, no more building of man made obstacles either, they want to keep the woods looking like a woods! Before anybody says anything, I now this last bit only really applies to me!! Ben10

Ray Sampson at SW Extreme
Its a good job I didn't win the 4X or I would have been unbearably big headed! This is a scan from the current Cycling Plus magazine, and guess what..... Its me taken during the Exmoor BEAST!!! Two national cycling magazines in one month!! Damo's mate spotted this and sent Damo the following text - "Page 100 of cycling plus theres a feature about the Exmoor Beast. Theres a photo of a rider with a Dept 26 jersey, can't see who tis though" Damo replied "Could be Miller" Damo's mate replied "Looked a bit like Miller but maybe a little fat for him. Stuck out like a sore thumb though, who wears a camelback on a road bike? Bit like wearing socks and sandals!"
FAME 2!!!!

A nice shot of spike from the weekends racing, full photo extravaganza coming soon!
Spike at SW Extreme
This is Jakes first proper little edit, nice one!!
It was a day of ups and downs, rain, wind and lots of mud at SW Extreme. Through all the carnage a new Dept.26 4X champion has been crowned!!
LEE SAMPSON is the winner!!!
Looking forward to the next race now, which is probably going to be in the spring. It will be a good opportunity to knock Lee of the top step!
Thanks to everyone who turned up and raced, I think everyone loved it! Also thanks to all the spectators who stood in a muddy field in a gale and cheered us on! Thanks to Shaun and Matt and anybody else who helped with the organising.
Full race video, results and photo extravaganza coming ASAP!
If you have any footage, photos etc please send them to me (Ben10) any way you can so I can start putting the video together. Either call me on 07791642192 or email me pics at benjaminjamesclarke@hotmail.com
Next Saturday (3rd Dec) is the Dept.26 Xmas race at SW Extreme, get ready for some dirty 4 way action! Entry is £3 and anybody is welcome, you don't have to be in the club. Bring a friend! SW Extreme opens at 10am (i think) racing starts sometime after that to be precise.
In the evening, after the racing, is the Dept.26 Xmas dinner at the Brendon in Bude. Woop whoop!
Anybody who's been on a ride with Vinny's mate Spike (like we did on Wednesday night at Minions) will hopefully know why this is Vid of the week! That little ripper of a dog could be Kelly!
Not video of the week, just thought id put it on here. Im only in it for a few seconds as well!!
Just in case you go riding the new track in the local woods ("The Nutty New One" as it has become known) be careful because there is a half built jump near the start after the first few berms. If its daylight you will see it no problem but in the dark you might not. Don't ride on it, its not finished! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!
Another trialsy vid but its a beut. Danny Macaskill, Industrial Revolutions. Hands up if you can ride along a rope 20ft up in the air...anybody?
In case you hadn't realised yet what a self obsessed nob head I am (Ben10) here is the final bit of evidence you will need! Not content with putting pictures and videos of myself all over the club website I have now had a picture of myself in this months 'Readers who love themselves" section in MBUK! (see pic below)
Not to be outdone though, Large also has a picture in a national magazine (MBR). Its a picture of his giant purple bottom after his crash earlier this year at Tavi woods.
Fame has come to Dept.26 at last, even if it is because of a pair of arses!
Arse!!

Jump sequence at Haldon forest, Devon
The club shirts are here! In this vid they re being tested out on the newest little run through the woods.
Wales trip is approaching fast and it gonna be sooooooooooooo gooooooooooood! So, get your 90 quid into one of the higher ranking club members before 27th August or you won't be able to come as places are filling up fast. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Welcome to the Dept.26 ride guide, If you want to add anything to this email Ben10 at benjaminjamesclarke@hotmail.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bude - Lots of good stuff around Bude, join the club to find out whats here!
Bodmin Moor - Minions - Moorland ride near Liskeard, some big climbs but some great downs to make it worthwhile. Again, best go here with the club or you will probably get lost! Lots of other rides on the moor as well.
Dartmoor - Tons of routes over Dartmoor, too many to mention here. As a club though we do a nice little ride near Meldon.
Tavistock - Home to Gawton, Tavi woods and the dirt jumps in town. So, plenty to do around here! See the woodland riders site for details - www.woodlandriders.com
Wadebridge - Home to Hustyns woods. Packed full of trails, pretty big place with lots to ride. In Wadebridge town centre follow brown signs to Hustyns then keep going for a few miles uphill, you can see the woods on your left, turn down a farm track and your there! If you want a particularly easy day there is the Camel Trail which you can get on in Wadebridge town.
Exeter - Home to Haldon forest. Theres a couple of graded trails around the forest, The blue route isn't very technical but is fun if ridden fast, the red ridge trail has some interesting sections but the final part of this route is a bit tame. There is an optional Black section half way along the red. Theres some jumps, skills area and a pump track. Forget all this though, theres so much amazing unofficial stuff in Haldon you will never find it all in a day! To get here head towards Exeter then turn off heading towards Plymouth following the signs for Exeter race course, turn right and head towards the forest! Also check out Woodbury Common around the Exmouth area.
Portreath - Home to 'The Track' You can find this place on the road between Redruth and Portreath, and trust me it definitely worth finding! National standard BMX course, beginners jumps, medium jumps and HUGE jumps! Foam pit, Pump track etc! Website is here - http://www.the-track.co.uk/
Poldice Valley - Old mining valley near Redruth, rammed with jumps and DH runs. Also check out the near by Unity woods. You can either cycle through here as part of the Mineral tramway cycle route starting in Devoran, Portreath or the nearest place to the valley is scorrior. You can also get into the valley off the road on the way to Carnon Downs dump. Look for the Cornwall Freeriders Facebook page for more info.
Tehidy woods - Near Camborne. Pretty big with lots of fun routes, nothing too amazing or technical but worth a look. Follow brown signs for Tehidy country park from the A30 around Camborne/Pool/Redruth area.
Idless woods - Near Truro. Head out of Truro on the road to Shortlanesend and turn right in the village towards the woods.
SouthWest Extreme - Find this place at the Big sheep site on the road between Bude and Bideford. Never been but here its supposed to be great fun. Jumps, 4X track, drops etc.
Abbeyford woods - A few miles out of Okehampton town centre, Pretty big woods with lots of fun routes all over the place. Drive through Oke town centre and turn off towards the ind.est, go over some mini roundabouts and head for the trees which you should be able to see (i think!)
Plymouth - Newnham Park is a very well known race venue on the outskirts of Plymouth. Its private though so you can only ride here as part of an organised event or you may be shot. Cann woods, also on the outskirts of Plym but its forestry so you can ride there whenever. Cant remember how to get here so look it up if your interested. If your into racing look at this site - http://shredmag.co.uk/www.shredevents.com/
Launceston - Ideal for the winter months is The Unit. Its in Pennygillam Industrial estate and is a really good little indoor skate park, Monday nights is bikes only I think. Heres the website - http://www.skatetheunit.com
More places added soon.....
